Karen Gee is an education advocate who believes deeply in thoughtful, individualized approaches to learning. Her work centers on reducing the frustration and overwhelm students often experience by helping them understand how they learn and develop the skills needed to succeed with confidence and independence.

A significant portion of Karen’s graduate education at Dominican University focused on the global shadow education sector and the role of individualized academic support in student success. Her research emphasized that the most impactful factor in effective educational support is the quality of the student-educator relationship. When students feel safe, understood, and encouraged, they are more willing to engage with challenging material, persist through difficulty, and develop confidence in their own learning abilities.

Karen continues to deepen her professional practice through ongoing study and collaboration. She regularly attends academic conferences, including Learning & The Brain and the IAFOR International Conference on Education, where she explores emerging research in learning science, neurodiversity, and instructional design. Karen was also selected to participate in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Launch startup accelerator, where she examined issues of educational access and innovation. In addition, she has completed doctoral-level coursework at Northeastern University and regularly enrolls in continuing education through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET).

In her work with students, Karen integrates core principles of educational therapy into her practice. This includes assessing how students process information, designing individualized learning strategies, and explicitly teaching executive functioning skills such as planning, task initiation, organization, and self-monitoring. She emphasizes metacognitive skill-building, helping students understand how they learn, develop effective study systems, and apply strategies independently across academic settings. Karen works with a limited number of students to provide highly individualized support, focusing on building life skills such as self-advocacy and resilience in addition to academics.

Karen lives in Mill Valley with her partner, a professional bullfighter and fitness enthusiast. Outside of her work, she enjoys traveling and is rarely without a few good books on her beloved Kindle.
